Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

What is it?

In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), the surgeon reduces the stomach to the size of a small pouch. Size of this pouch is like an egg. Then this pouch is connected to the distant part of the small intestine and bypassing the large portion of stomach and small intestine. This procedure combines the restrictive and malabsorptive purpose of bariatric surgery together. Reduced and altered stomach holds very little food and bypassing major part of digestive tract reduces fat and calories to be less absorbed. This surgery is performed by opening the belly through large incision or through laparoscopically by small tiny 4-5 incisions. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will decide to do this operation as open abdomen or laparoscopically. In laparoscope surgery there are benefits like short stay in hospital, small scar, less chances of infection and herniation.

This surgery is recommended only when weight loss is not achieved by other methods like diet or exercise, life style changes etc.  A strongly motivated thinking to lose weight and willingness to change in diet, activity and lifestyle is strongly recommended for the candidates who wants to undergo this surgery.
