This procedure is performed in patients with advanced arthritis of hip joint. Hip resurfacing (Hip resurfacing arthroplasty ) is the procedure of choice mostly in young active patients. Unlike total hip replacement most of the bone is preserved in hip resurfacing. The procedure is performed under general or local anaesthesia. The walking pattern which is achieved after hip resurfacing is near normal compare to total hip replacement. Chances of hip joint dislocation after hip resurfacing are very minimal as the size of the ball used to fit in the socket of pelvis bone is near natural size. Moreover the procedure of hip resurfacing is technically easier to revise than total hip replacement. The implants used in both hip resurfacing and total hip replacement wear off or loosen after 15 to 20 years depending on the material used. In such cases hip resurfacing is easier to revise than hip replacement. The degree of motion achieved in hip resurfacing is greater than total hip replacement.
